Lesson 1: Japanese Characters

Hi! I am trying to review for my Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) this coming December and thought why not make a reviewer online for people like me or some others who just want to learn learn a new language?

In this Japanese 101 series, I will upload Japanese vocabulary and grammar examples patterned after the book Minna No Nihongo. Hope you enjoy learning the Japanese Language with me!

The first step in learning the Japanese Language is familiarizing yourself with the characters they use. They have four (4) writing characters - Hiragana, Katakana, Romaji, and Kanji. The most fundamental ones are Hiragana and Katakana which are summarized in tables below.

Hiragana is generally used for traditional Japanese terminologies and vocabularies, while Katakana is used for foreign words. For example, for the word ticket, you say きっぷ (kippu) or チケット (chiketto).

After finally memorizing or familiarizing yourself with the characters, let's move on to Lesson 2: Simple Self Introduction.
